Grow With Us

The Sparrow… Est. 1995

“Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” – Lk. 12:7b

One of the most significant ministries of FBC is the Sparrow Food Pantry. The Sparrow was created by the members of the FBC Women’s Ministry in 1995. With the assistance of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, The Sparrow opened its doors to the local community in February 1996. Its official hours of operation are every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM with the exception of 5th Saturday. The members of FBC also established a Feeding the Hungry Program with St. John’s Catholic Church-Newark where we prepare and serve cooked meals every 5th Saturday of the month. By the grace of God, The Sparrow has now grown into becoming the largest food pantry in Union County today!
As of today, The Sparrow is spearheaded by two Ministry Directors Elder Bettina Freeland and Elder Marva Hunt who also serve as key spiritual leaders in our congregation. Both Directors work as a team to manage 4 volunteer teams consisting of 24 volunteer staff members (including 4-6 high school and college students) who assist with the staging of food, registering of clients, and disbursement of food resources 4 Saturdays out of the month. The Sparrow was recently informed by the Community Food Bank of New Jersey that since 2015 we distributed 1,245,983 pounds of food to clients in Union County through our partnership with CFB.
We thank God for the vision God has given us and your willingness to help us in sharing that vision with the world!
To God be the Glory!
